Rodney Elmstrand had a dream in the late 1970s when he finished college: to take over the family farm that his parents had purchased 80 acres of in 1934.

However, he didn’t have the equipment to do traditional farming of corn and soybeans, so he started Rod’s Berry Farm instead.

Rod attended “Strawberry School” at the University of Minnesota and planted his first plants in 1981 with the help of his siblings.

After the first picking season in 1982, Rod married Sara, and they have been blessed with five wonderful children who have grown up helping around the farm.

Rod also worked as an Extension Educator for the Minnesota Extension Service for 27 years.

Visitors can bring their own containers or purchase containers with lids at the farm to collect their berries, or even buy pre-picked blueberries.

The farm also has plenty of picnic tables spread throughout the property, so you can take a break and enjoy a snack while you pick.

2. JQ Fruit Farm & Orchard

JQ Fruit Farm and Orchard is part of a family farm that has been around since 1906. It started with a 40 acre homestead on the north side of Princeton, Minnesota, located near the Rum River.

Frank and Nettie Penhallegon grew carrots, potatoes, and chickens on the land.

Knut Wold and his wife Bergit settled the farm in 1856. They had 11 children, and they all contributed to farming the land. 

The Wold family takes pride in their blueberry crop, ensuring that each berry is grown with love and care. They pick the berries at the peak of ripeness and use sustainable practices to ensure that their blueberries are of the highest quality.

The farm follows organic practices and does not use any pesticides or chemicals on their plants. They are open on weekends, some evenings, and weekdays when the berries are ready.
